Getting ready for the winter revival

Hey fellas I have a 1993 GS-R sitting in my garage with the B17A1 that I plan on rebuilding this winter. I believe the bottom end is alright, it's just the top end valve stem seals and the head gasket that needs replacing. Head gasket is obviously leaking oil and maybe some coolant. Reason I say valve stem seals is it burns oil over 5500 rpm, when vtec is activated. No consumption that I'm aware of when I baby it - which isn't that often, lol.

My number one concern is the fact that I have no idea what was done to the engine by the previous owner(s). I bought it last summer and simply got in it and drove. The engine sings, I know for sure there is nothing that needs critical attention. So far I've driven 15,000 km and have had no issues besides for the burning oil.

The engine has 268,000 km. I've had a few people in my car that know Honda motors quite well and they say this car makes more power than a stock B17A1. It's straight piped and has a Skunk2 intake. That's all I can see from the surface. The other hint that some changes were made from original is the Skunk2 camshaft seal on the front shaft (exhaust cam?) to the left of the head. -- I'll take a picture if that isn't specific enough.

I'm trying to avoid any surprises before I open the engine up. It'll be my first time opening an engine up. I'm an Instrument Technician by trade so needless to say I'm very confident with my mechanical abilities.

Any chance that this motor could have seals or gaskets that are a different spec from OEM? For example: I want to purchase a full rebuilt kit, since eventually I plan on replacing the piston rings, just not yet. I want to be sure that I can use every seal and gasket from that kit, as they're needed.

I'm fully aware it's not a simple job, hence why I'm starting it early so I have time to think about it before summer hits. I want to be able to take my time with every part of the process, clean everything up the best I can, inspect things, etc etc.

Bump. Need to order some parts and guidance is necessary. Really appreciate if someone can help out.

I would probably get a Head Gasket Set, Just tell the parts guy you got a 1993 Acura Integra GS-R with the 1.7L engine and they should be able to look up any part for you. Only way you might have custom parts is if somebody else changed them.

And since taking of the cylinder head requires you to take the timing belt off may be a good time to replace timing belt and seals and water pump if you wish.

Thanks for the reply.

What's your opinion on the DNJ FGS2017 kit from RockAuto.com? It's currently priced at $8.18.

I personally haven't used them, but I google them and one forums had some people saying that they were fine. Only thing I can say is need to do some research your self, Unless anybody else has any experience with them.

I absolutely agree... After much research I've settled with Victor Reinz full top-end kit.

That 8.18 price was a fault on their end, ended up they wanted $130 for it, the same as the VR top-end set.
