So the other day I put 92 gas in my car to see if I would get better mileage and ran it till the gas light was on then I put regular gas back in it after I pulled out of the gas station my check engine light started blinking and white smoke was coming out of my exhaust could the change of gas cause the misfire?

If you smelled it and it smelled sweet, more than likely you're smelling coolant being burned.
If it's a chalky, crude smell, then your piston rings might be shot. That smell is oil burning.

I don't see how changing octane would mess with your headgasket, unless your engine got abnormally hot during the time you ran 92 octane.
