Default starter removal

I've got a 91' LS and I need to replace the starter on it. I removed the two long bolts and the starter half slid off, yet the solenoid seems stuck. I can't see any bolts on it yet I can't seem to get it out. Any suggestions?

i believed you removed the wrong bolts, you probably removed the skinny long bolts for the armature housing. you need to remove the lower & upper mounting bolts pictured here:

you can go in from the top.

I dont want to insult your intelligence but be sure to disconnect the battery ground and secure the cable away from the battery before beginning anything.

1.remove intake tube
2. move evaporator/carbon canister out of way (it is the black thing mounted on firewall with tubes going into the top). It is mounted on slides, so just lift up on it and it should dismount. pull it up or push it down out of your way whichever makes it easier to get your arms down by the starter.
3. remove the little bolt that is holding a wire harness in the left side of starter. Pushing this wiring harness down out of your way is what is going to allow access to the lower starter bolt.
4. I would use your fingers to find the lower bolt and put the shallow socket on first and then try to bring the extension to the socket instead of trying to get the whole ratchet-extension-socket combo in at the same time.
I just did this on my 91 ls not too long ago when I rebuilt my starter. You dont have to go in through the wheel or go from underneath at all. It is a beatch to get that lower bolt so be patient and you will get it.

I believe they are 14mm bolts.

I am in the process of replacing my starter as well on a '91 GS. I had to remove my intake, battery and distributor cap. But once I did that, I used a 1/2" drive breaker bar, a 1/2" to 3/8" drive adapter, an 8" extension and the 14mm socket. After attacking the top bolt with all that and some PB Blaster/WD40 it was a cinch!

Getting the bottom bolt off, however, is a whole 'nother story!!!!! Keep in mind, I have small girly hands, but even I had a tough time getting that socket on that bottom bolt. I've gone at it from the top, inside the passenger wheel well, from underneath, upside down, inside out, backwards, forewards, to Wonderland and back again! I was at it for almost two hours today!!!! I even tried the 14mm pivot socket with absolutely no luck. Any suggestions???

You have to use a flex head rachet to remove the bolts, especially the bottom one. http://www.sears.com/craftsman-1-2-i...3&blockType=G3
