Default Tri-Y Header?

I've been looking into those tri-y header designs, mainly because I found a vid on youtube of a b20 with one and it really appears to alter the sound in a good way and supposedly flow the best. I can pick one up from a guy on craigslist around here for $50, and I was going to just take it to a muffler shop to have whatever I need altered to fit it.

Currently I have a 2.5" 4-2-1, but basically I'd like to know if anyone has any experience with these tri-y designs and if you think it wouldn't be a bad idea to switch over. I'll throw a pic up of the header I can get for $50 and the video I found of the b20 teg with the awesome sound. Keeping in mind I have a PWJDM intake, stock cat, 2.5" piping then 2.25" Greddy DT muffler, how do you think it would sound with this on there?

The Tri-Y is referring to the Hytech Tri-Y design. Its a race header that is much longer than the normal header. Some custom piping will be needed to match it up to the cat-back, and the catalytic converter will be removed.

I'll snap some shots of mine tomorrow. Some hacking was necessary with mine at the radiator fan to get it to clear.

Thanks man. So do you even think it would be worth me doing? How does yours sound; did you get any like grumble out of it? Also, is it possible to run a cat with it? I heard by like shortening the B pipe or something you can get a cat in there and still have all the hangars line up. I was thinking I could go to a muffler shop and maybe they could evaluate what would really have to be done. And yeah, pics would help, thanks

Do they have emissions testing in your part or maryland? If so, then you cant do this, as it removes the catalytic converter. You will fail emissions immediately.

Mine is ungodly loud (which is why Im going to get a new muffler), although I also have bigger cams and a different head. I had a welder at a local performance shop do the flex pipe and extension for me. It cost a bit over $200, and $80 of that was him getting new flanges and the flex pipe.

Damn.. I could of sworn I've heard of people still using their cat and just shortening the b pipe or something.

Well sure you could do that, but IMO its not really what the header is meant for. The race header is a performance upgrade, opening up flow and removing the cat to get rid of that restriction.

You would need to take some length off of the catback piping to make up for the added length of the header. And it wont be as loud with the cat as it would without it, because you still have that bit of restriction hampering the exhaust flow.

I agree that it is a bit more than your engine needs as far as flow.
Also, I'd get rid of the 2.25 muffler on behind the 2.5" piping. You don't want to go down in diameter as you go back. Or just get some 2.25" piping.
