When I bought the car, the antenna was broken. Wanting to fix it I bought a universal antenna. whenever I unplug the antenna the radio doesnt work or even turn on...what am I doing wrong here?

Probably unplugged the harness, not the antenna.

I took off the back panel and unscrewed the motor, unplugged the wires and the big black wire

sounds like you have your radio hooked up wrong, i did the same thing and my radio works fine, but if it is properly installed there should be a blue wire and a blue wire with a white stripe on it. cut both of them (unless you have an amp then just cut the one not going to the amp) before they go into your factory wire harness and tape them so they won't ground on anything. some radio's only have one remote wire so do your best to unhook the antenna and not your amp.
