94 GSR temp gauge

Hello to all.

The details:
So I just finished replacing my water pump, thermostat, fan switch sensor and the temp sending sensor. All with the battery disconnected. Some of these were proactive measures and others were required. I flushed the system and have quadruple checked the fluid levels. The fans engage with the A/C as well as when it gets warmed up.

The Problem:
When I turn the key to position 2, the water temp gauge rises to about 3/4. Once I start the car it rises to the red line and when it warms up it rests on the 'H.'

What gives? Can the gauge itself require servicing?

Thanks

doesnt hurt to swap out clusters to see if its the gauge itself.

does it do that when the car is cold?

Did you re-attach the ground on the thermostat housing?

The gauge should be running on an electrical impulse send by the sensor as it warms up. If the car is cold, it shouldnt be moving at all, so its getting power from something.

The terminal on the thermostat housing is secure and I re-seated many of the plugs on the sensors, even if I didn't work on it. When the car is off, the temp needle rests on cold and then moves after turning the key, so I know it can still move.

I suppose I'll have to remove the cluster to investigate further.
