I am looking into buying a light underdrive pulley. I heard that one will cause the motor to get thrown off balance is this true?

Stock pulleys have a rubber insert that works as a harmonic balancer. Aftermarket (generic) aluminum ones do not, and may not be properly balanced.

I would shy away from them, unless you go with a Fluidampr pulley, but those guys are $300.

i have a unorthodox crank pulley, and i refuse to use it.

id just stay stock unless you want to dish out a lot of money to buy a good one
