Anybody have experience with painting?

So my buddy who had the car before me just rattle canned the car... and I want to re-do it. I want to make it so that it has a nice shine to it. Is that possible with spray can? I have no idea how to paint. I think its something like:


Sand
Primer
Paint
Wet Sand
Paint
Wet Sand
Paint
Clear
Buff

sound right?

you can, but it's a lot of work and it usually dosent hold up very well

you wont get anywhere with rattle can. do it right the first time wont have to do it again.

imo... 400 bucks on a maaco job is better than 50 bucks on a rattle can job... atleast the maaco will look good for a year

I think it really depends on the prep work, and how complicated the paint job is. I painted my jeep a satin black and it looks fine especially for a 30 dollar job. No one knows it was painted unless they saw the jeep before. Given its a jeep but still there are multiple articles on the net about people doing this on other cars with good results.
