Best paint type for bare metal on our cars

so i have done a lot of searches on this and i got many different results. some say red oxide, some say etching primer, zinc chromer and urethane primer and so on. based on your experience, whats good? i don't want to use the best one, i need one that prevent rust/corrosion.

btw: is it bad to have your gas or brake pipe unplugged after you remove it?

I've used rustoleum self etching never had an issue and it is readily available at autozone pepboys home depot etc
