Yup map lol read it wrong. Could the oils from the filter mess the map or iacv up? Trying to rule out everything here.

I guess it is theoretically possible..but the MAP sensor isn't anywhere near as touchy as a MAF system is. Also, if the MAP sensor had an issue, it would be throwing a code and your CEL would be on(or should anyways). I used a K&N for a long time with no issues like this. You can try cleaning the IACV, but I am 99% sure that isn't your problem, because its for your idle. I would clean it anyway though, because it probably needs it.

Just out of curiosity how do your new spark plugs look? Take them out, do not clean them off and post pics for me. To me it sounds like it could be your catalytic converter like others have suggested. However, the fact that you say the symptoms went away for a little while after changing plugs, makes me question that theory. So lets just continue to check things off the list, before going straight to cat, because cats aren't cheap and I would hate to see you waste money on one and have it not fix the issue..

Actually...i thought it ran fine after I changed the plugs because I never let it fully get back up to temp. After it got back up to temp, same thing happened again. I'll pull the plugs and post a pic here in a few.

This one had kind of a blackish color on one side of the rim of the plug.

Plugs look ok. And no oil is on them, so that is a plus. However, there appears to be some white build up on them already. Which is usually a sign of a lean motor.

Note quite, because it is on all four plugs. Also, I don't believe that running a little lean is the cause of the issues you are describing.

I noticed this earlier too. When i changed my dizzy cap and rotor, the only OEM cap autozone carried was clear. Looks pretty cool, watching it spark and all...but I just noticed these blueish specs all around the inside of the cap. Oxidation is what it looks like...but there's no moisture in the cap.


Also had someone say exhaust leak...but I don't think that would be the issue. My heat shielding on my cat did start rattling a couple weeks before this happened.

Are you sure it is the heat shield and not the cat itself? If it is the cat that is rattling, then it is toast, and is very very likely to be the cause of your problem. Also would have been a good bit of information to have from the start of this :p

I'm pretty sure its the shielding. I pulled the lower part of the shielding off about 5 months ago due to rattling, and now the top portion is starting to rattle too. How do I make sure? It only rattles at certain rpms (watch the video, you can hear it when I'm revving) so I had my brother hold the throttle while I was under the car poking at it with a screwdriver lol. The rattling stopped when I applied force onto the shielding. I didn't even know the cat itself would rattle if it was bad.

Also the stock inlet and outlet size for my cat is 2" right? If so I can pick up a magna flow cat from Autozone for $75 if this is indeed the issue. I'm working early today (5:30am-12pm) so I'll check back here when I'm off. Thanks for your help so far, I really appreciate it.

So I did the sea foam trick and smoke came out of where the header meets the downpipe. Exhaust leak could be causing all this? The car is also still running the same, so carbon build-up was NOT the issue.

Are you running stock header? An exhaust leak that close to the exhaust ports on the head could definitely cause you issues. Not saying that it is the cause of everything you are experiencing, but it is something I would get fixed ASAP.

How many miles are on your cat?

Give me as many specs as you can about your car. Miles, list of mods, a pic of the engine bay. Any other issues you have noticed.

Yep stock header. Everything on my exhaust is stock and my car has 171k on it. Engine is 100% stock except for a k&n filter. This is the only issue I have noticed with it. No leaks or anything. I'll put up a bay pic in a few minutes. I can take another video of what it's doing if you want.

I can't find the right gasket anywhere online. At least what I think is the right one. It was smoking from here:


The video is currently processing on YouTube. I'll have it here in a few.

I also want to know if it could be my cap or rotor? I just replaced them a few months ago so I didn't think they would be causing any issue. There's no CEL either.
