How do you check CEL codes?

how can i check to see what code its throwing up? i remember with my friend i think he pulled out his ecu and put like a paper clip in it and it threw up some lights and you count how much lights to see what code its throwing up. can you guys help me find out what it is?

take it to auto zone. They have a code reader since yours is a OBD2. Easiest way.

autozone rents it for free ... i think its just a deposit and when you bring it back you get all the money

and the paper clip thing only works on obd1 cars you count the blinks on the check engine light i helped my friend do it on his 95 civic

i think i need a new cat, if it was the o2 sensor than it would have said something else. the paper clip thing does work on obd II cars i tried it and got code 67
