oil cooler b18c1

Ok, so I bought my car a few months back with a blown engine (grenaded 96 c1). Bought a 95 c1 block (nothing on it). My understanding is the 95 c1 had an oip cooler and the 96 c1 didnt. Well I forgot to pull the filter stud on the 96 c1.
My question is, if the 95 had an oil cooler, does it need one? Or can I run a sandwich plate? I dont have the water to oil cooler tube that runs from the water pump to the thermostat housing. Just the 96s water tube. Doesnt have the extra ports to run the oil cooler. Should I tap into a water line on the tube? Or just say screw it and use the cooler as the sandwich plate and not run water through it?
thanks.

I did find a cooler for $15. Was just thinking of leaving it "dry".
