Bummer. You were doomed from the start it sounds like. Points for trying though. You can get away with just replacing that half of the trans case. That is if you want to do it the right way.

Are ls trans cases and gsr cases the same? I was thinking just getting a fucked up trans and just swap the cases.
And it still had mtf in it

Jb weld will work if done right, If not they make stuff called Die Putty, it's used in machine shops to fix dies, you can machine it and everything, hard as steel. You could mold it to fit, grind it flat, then retap it.

Lol! I just did the same shit the other day excet I had a brain fart and was trying to take it out and torqued instead. What I did was dried around the hole, put high temp gasket sealant around the plug. Waited to make sure the leak stopped and put jb weld over to make sure it held in. No leak since. Thank Gawd I'm not the only one. I want to lay under my car and kick the damn jack stand out from under the car.
