Temp gauge problems

Hey Guys,

Im new to this and I have a 1996 Integra RS, I am having temp gauge problems. When the car is stopped and in neutral the temperature falls down to cold and when its driving its in the middle which is normal. You guys have any suggestions what this could be? Is it a sensor problem or is it a thermostat issue?

Please do help with suggestions and thanks in advance guys.

My temp gauge is the exact opposite, it raises to normal temp when i come to a stop but drops down to cold when im driving.

thermostat?

How do I change the thermostat or check to see if thats the problem?

If anything I'd suspect the thermostat is stuck open.
when mine was bad, i had the opposite problem than the OP... when you were at a light the car would warm up and once you started moving it would cool back down again. it is worth checking though, it is really easy to replace though, and it shouldnt be more than $15-$20
1. drain all coolant
2. follow lower rad hose to where it meets the block
3. undo housing and replace thermostat and gasket
4. put housing back together
5. bleed system
6. go for a test drive

I changed it and the temperature seems to be fine now.

HOWEVER, the car is suddenly using more gas and at times (in the morning) its giving off black smoke.

Black smoke sounds like a fuel problem, google is your best friend
