His crank may be damaged from a spun rod. (Might explain why he's rebuilding the bottom end.) Personally if i'm replacing parts I prefer to upgrade them.

A rough idle can be caused by half a million things. That's why the car was built with an on board diagnostic system. (Your check engine light.) It could be your distributor cap, rotor, spark, plugs, wires, vacuum lines, IACV, FITV... The list goes on, but if the car is throwing an EGR code-...

Time to diagnose the EGR setup. Pick up a vacuum gauge. Here's the pages from the factory service manual regarding the EGR. Hope it helps.

If it's overly loud you could have an exhaust leak. A couple other possibly options are that you have the spark plug wires on incorrectly. You could still run it but you would have a misfire and it would backfire throughout the RPM range. Another option is that your mechanical timing is off...

Depending on if it's ever been rebuilt, the head bolts can probably be re-used. Although boost does increase the likelihood of them stretching. If you're going to ever boost it in the future I would recommend upgrading to ARP head studs. ($140-150?) If you can't afford $200 for a set of head...
